Italy's First King

Taras is the first king of southern Italy and the son of Poseidon. Even more astounding, Taras is one of over 100 children of Poseidon. He had so many there isn't an exact number. Taras' mother is a Tarentine Nymph. Nymphs are the names given to young women of Greek mythology who are also goddesses of nature. Each Nymph gets her name from the location or type of landform she rules over. So Taras' mother's name literally means inhabitant of the Greek city of Ancient Italy, Tarentum.

The story goes that Taras was sent a dolphin by his father to rescue him at sea from a shipwreck. Hence the engraved image of Taras on a dolphin. The horse on the reverse side of the coin is an ode to the love Italians had for horses and horse races. What a conversation piece.
